It’s been a good week for and from people in my orbit who’ve been:
Winning. Three startups I advise and have worked with received well-deserved recognition in the form of being named to “best of the year” lists. Top 18, top 25, or top 100 doesn’t matter - what matters is having the confidence to apply and rise above the crowd.
Standing out. Someone I’ve mentored for a good chunk of 2020 (and feel like I’ve known much longer) was named to Forbes’ 30 under 30 list. I can’t take credit beyond suggesting he apply — his remarkable depth of skill and passion for his work are what landed him there.
Getting inspired. I had a great brainstorming session with the kids from Civics Unplugged about how to teach civics to American adults. Sadly, too many of us have forgotten more than we ever knew about how our country, our state and our city/town/county is run. But I feel better trusting our future’s in the hands of these passionate kids.
Be part of something. Anything.
More than ever, we as humans have been reduced to flat screens and email addresses or phone numbers. The chemistry of in-person engagement is still a ways off (I’m now guessing September) as the chemistry that allows us to get back to safely seeing each other in the flesh gets perfected and distributed.
Personally I was feeling pretty invisible most of the year, due to the trifecta of moving to a new city, living in a temporary apartment, and well, the state of the world. That’s what prompted me to start writing routinely. It’s given me focus, reconnected me with countless friends and colleagues, and led me to some great conversations (and business).
Be thoughtful.
While most of us will never be as visible as that devil Ryan Reynolds, who is one of the more artful self-promoters, the advice I’ve been asked to give about how to get your message out over the last few years has resulted in a few thoughtful nuggets of wisdom:
Be direct. Say what you mean. Say it simply. Say it regularly.
Be consistent. As uncomfortable as it might be, it’s better to put out something rather than remain deep in thought about nothing. Don’t do it once, do it routinely. And do it when you think it’s not working. You’ll surprise and inspire yourself.
Be yourself. As Oscar Wilde said, “Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken.” I use this quote with clients and I tell that to friends and colleagues trying to rise above the noise.
What do you want to say or show to people beyond your immediate circle? Don’t sit on it, put it out there.
Be Visible.
Your best missive to date. You're getting the hang of this thing!
